Sonoma Schools Alliance offers many ways to get involved, from simple everyday actions that take five minutes to deeper commitments that create real, lasting change. Every level of participation matters. Here is how you can help.

Share our posts with your friends and neighbors. Every share puts important information in front of someone who may not have seen it.
✅ Sign up for our email updates Stay informed without having to seek out information yourself. We bring the updates directly to your inbox, in English and Spanish.
✅ Share what you know Talk to your neighbors, your friends, the parents you see at school pickup. Word of mouth is still the most powerful form of community organizing. Tell people what is happening and point them to our website.
✅ Contact a trustee Send a short email to one or more board trustees about an issue that concerns you. It takes five minutes and it gets noticed.
Meeting Calendar
SVUSD board meetings and trustee office hours are open to the public. No registration required. Board meetings are generally held the second Thursday of the month at the Sonoma City Hall Chambers, 177 First St. W., with open session at 6:00 PM.
Study sessions and special meetings are usually at the District Office, 17850 Railroad Ave. Always check the agenda for each meeting's location and time. The full 2026-2027 meeting and office hours schedule will be posted here once the district releases it in August.

HOW TO SUBMIT PUBLIC COMMENT
Public comment is your direct line to the board. Every board meeting includes a public comment period where any community member may speak. Here is how to use it effectively:
At the meeting:
Arrive early and pick up a speaker ticket at the door. There are 2 types of tickets: one for topics ARE on the agenda and one for items that NOT on the agenda.
“At the beginning” of the open agenda, there will be a public comment session for the public to make comments pertaining to items “on the agenda”.
An opportunity for public comment regarding any school-related matter “not on this agenda”will be given at the end of the regular agenda.
You will typically have 2-3 minutes to speak. If really crowded be prepared for a 1 minute remark. Be prepared for all 3 possibilities. We always go to the meeting with a message we can say in 3, 2 & 1 minute time frame.
Address the board directly and state your name for the record
Stay focused, 1 clear point made well is more powerful than several points made quickly
You do not need to be a district parent or resident to speak, all community members are welcome. Having quality Public Education benefits EVERY person in Sonoma Valley.
In writing:
Written public comments can be submitted to the board via email before or during a meeting.
Written comments become part of the official public record.
Tips from Sonoma Schools Alliance:
Come prepared with specific facts and specific questions
Be respectful in tone, you are more likely to be heard.
Coordinate with other community members so multiple voices reinforce the same message.
If you are not comfortable speaking alone, bring a friend and speak together or have someone else deliver your remarks.

📋 Attend a board meeting: Board meetings are open to the public and require no registration. Simply show up. Your presence alone sends a message, and if you want to speak during public comment, we will help you prepare.

📋 Attend Trustee Office Hours: This is one of the most underutilized opportunities in local civic engagement. Office hours give you direct, one on one access to your elected school board representatives.

When You're Ready, Here's How
You do not have to join anything. There are no monthly meetings or sign up for a committee. Most people help in small ways, on their own time, and that adds up. Here are real things you can do, each one on its own, whenever a moment matters to you.
Share one post. When an update explains something clearly, send it to one person, or put it on your own page. Most people learn about their schools from someone they trust, not from the district. You can be that person for someone.
Email one trustee about one thing. You do not need a speech. Pick the issue that matters to you and write a few sentences. One clear email from a real constituent carries weight. Their addresses are above.
Show up the one time it counts. You do not have to attend every Board meeting. But when something affects your school, your child, or your neighborhood, come to that Board meeting and speak, or just sit in the room. Presence is noticed. The guide above shows you exactly how.
Ask a question. If something about the district does not make sense, ask. You can do it without giving your name. Sometimes the most powerful thing is a question the district has to answer in public.
Forward an update to a neighbor. The families most affected by these decisions are often the last to hear about them. Passing along one email in the language they read is a small act with a long reach.
You do not have to do all of this. Pickone. Do it when it matters to you. That is how a community keeps its schools honest, not all at once, but one informed person at a time.

That's enough. Reading the updates, understanding how your district works, knowing what your board is doing, that is its own kind of participation. Most change starts with people who simply paid attention. Sign up for updates, read when you can, and act if and when something moves you. There is no wrong way to care about your schools.

CÓMO PRESENTAR UN COMENTARIO PÚBLICO
El comentario público es su línea directa con la junta. Cada reunión de la junta incluye un período de comentarios públicos en el que cualquier miembro de la comunidad puede hablar. Así puede usarlo de manera efectiva:
En la reunión:
Llegue temprano, anótese en la hoja de oradores en la entrada y recoja un boleto de orador en la puerta. Hay dos tipos de boletos: uno para temas que NO están en la agenda y otro para temas que SÍ están en la agenda.
“Al comienzo de la sesión'“ abierta habrá un período de comentarios públicos para hablar sobre los temas que están en la agenda.
Al final de la agenda regular se dará la oportunidad de comentar sobre cualquier asunto escolar que NO esté en la agenda.
Por lo general tendrá de 2 a 3 minutos para hablar. Si hay mucha gente, prepárese para un comentario de 1 minuto. Esté listo para ambas posibilidades.
2. Diríjase directamente a la junta y diga su nombre para que quede en el acta.
3. Manténgase enfocado. Un punto claro y bien dicho es más poderoso que varios puntos dichos de prisa.
No necesita ser padre ni residente del distrito para hablar. Todos los miembros de la comunidad son bienvenidos.

Cuando Esté Listo, Así Puede Ayudar
No tiene que unirse a nada. No tiene que venir a cada reunión ni inscribirse en un comité. La mayoría de las personas ayudan en cosas pequeñas, en su propio tiempo, y eso se suma. Estas son cosas reales que puede hacer, cada una por su cuenta, cuando algún momento le importe.
Comparta una publicación. Cuando una actualización explique algo con claridad, envíesela a una persona o publíquela en su propia página. La mayoría de la gente se entera de lo que pasa en sus escuelas por alguien de confianza, no por el distrito. Usted puede ser esa persona para alguien.
Escriba a un miembro de la junta sobre un solo tema. No necesita un discurso. Elija el tema que le importa y escriba unas cuantas frases. Un correo claro de un verdadero miembro de la comunidad tiene peso. Sus direcciones están más arriba.
Preséntese la única vez que cuenta. No tiene que asistir a todas las reuniones. Pero cuando algo afecte a su escuela, a su hijo o a su vecindario, venga a esa reunión y hable, o simplemente siéntese en la sala. La presencia se nota. La guía de más arriba le muestra exactamente cómo.

A veces necesitamos una mano para una sola tarea: traducir una publicación al español, tomar una foto en una reunión, leer un documento, diseñar un volante. La ayuda de una sola vez es ayuda de verdad. Si tiene una habilidad que ofrecer, comuníquese con nosotros.
No tiene que hacer todo esto. Elija una cosa. Hágala cuando le importe. Así es como una comunidad mantiene honestas a sus escuelas, no todo de una vez, sino una persona informada a la vez.
`¿Solo Quiere Mantenerse Informado?
Con eso basta. Leer las actualizaciones, entender cómo funciona su distrito, saber qué está haciendo su junta, eso es una forma de participación en sí misma. Casi todo cambio empieza con personas que simplemente prestaron atención. Suscríbase a las actualizaciones, lea cuando pueda, y actúe si algo lo mueve y cuando lo mueva. No hay una forma incorrecta de preocuparse por sus escuelas.
Cada voz importa.
Cada acción cuenta.
