Impolite for Whom? What Actually Happened at the September 10 SVUSD Board Meeting/¿Descortés para quién?

The September 10 Sonoma Valley Unified School District board meeting ran nearly five hours, most of it on the Pride flag policy. 31 voices of students and community members spoke, all of them asking the board to keep the flag flying. I was one of the speakers that night, on a different topic, LCFF funding. I did not get to finish.

Two things from that meeting are worth putting on the record, side by side, because they show the same pattern from two different angles.

Who gets called impolite

During public comment, one speaker, a local pastor, argued against the flag and against what he called the "sexual indoctrination" of students. The room reacted audibly. Board President David Bell stepped in to defend him:

"He listened to all of you speak and didn't interrupt you and didn't make any derogatory comments to him. So why does he deserve derogatory comments when he's speaking his mind and his opinion?"

Compare that to what happened later in the meeting, during the board's own deliberation, when the room reacted to something Bell himself said. Trustee Catarina Landry cut in:

"I am so tired of every time this man speaks that there's comments in the room. You have all made it very clear. Okay, we know how you feel, but disrespect in this room is not going to be tolerated. Please stop."

Trustee Jason Lehman backed her up, threatening to remove people from the room:

"I will ask you to leave, I will... If you can't, I will personally ask you to step out and not return tonight."

So the same room, reacting the same way, was framed two different ways in one night. When it reacted to a speaker arguing against the Pride flag, Bell called it undeserved disrespect toward a man simply "speaking his mind." When it reacted to Bell, Landry called it intolerable disrespect that justified ejecting people. The double standard is not subtle. It runs in exactly one direction, and it ran that direction while dozens of students told this board, in their own words, that a flag on a pole is the difference between feeling safe at school and not.

I experienced this firsthand. During the flag discussion, while I was speaking, I had to stop and ask directly: "Adoption… David, are you listening or are you now being impolite to me?"

My comment, cut off

Later that night, during public comment on items not on the agenda, I raised a different issue entirely: the district's own adopted LCAP plan set aside just over $2 million in supplemental and concentrated funding, money earmarked by the state specifically for English learners, foster youth, and low-income students. The district spent $260,000 of it.

I was in the middle of laying out exactly where the other $1.7 million went, including the elimination of seven site-based literacy positions that served those same students, when the board thanked me for my comment, adjourned the meeting mid-sentence and cut me off from my Zoom connection, essentially hanging up on me.

This was not the first time. In May, at a board study session on the LCAP, I began a public comment on an agenda item and was stopped mid-sentence there too, this time by Trustee Landry directing Bell to shut me down on a claim of irrelevance that the district's own agenda contradicted. I have sent the district a formal cease and desist demand under the Brown Act covering both incidents. That process is ongoing, and I will report on it as it develops.

Why this matters

None of this is about hurt feelings. It is about whether the people running a public school district treat public participation, and public criticism of their own conduct, as something they are legally required to allow, or as something they can shut down whenever it becomes uncomfortable for them specifically. The transcript from September 10 answers that question on its own terms. I would encourage anyone who wants to check my account against the source to watch the meeting itself on SonomaTV's YouTube channel.

No pude terminar.
